BRIEF ARTICLES

These pieces are from the April 2001 issue of our print newsletter.

On the River Again

Some authors can define a genre. Since the publication of Blue Highways, William Least Heat-Moon has been one of those authors. With his latest project, River-Horse, Least Heat-Moon is again out to discover the soul of America, this time traveling by river.

It is our great honor to request your company at a reading and signing with William Least Heat-Moon on Friday, 6 April 2001 at 7:15 PM. This event will take place at the Danville Library located at 400 Front Street. Tickets are $5 and will benefit the Friends of the Danville Library Endowment Fund. For more details, call us at (925) 837-7337. To make a contribution to the Endowment Fund, call Helen Pearlstein at (925) 938-7323.

A Feast for the Imagination

Best-selling cookbook author Carol Field has created a feast for the imagination. Her first novel Mangoes and Quince tells the story of Miranda, abandoned by her husband Anton, who disappeared into the South Seas. Marooned, but restlessly inspired, Miranda expresses her passion through cooking. But the as the restaurant she builds in Anton’s ancestral home grows increasingly popular – and along with it, Miranda – her daughter Diana recedes into a world of longing for her lost father.
Mangoes and Quince is part mystery, part love story, part family drama, and intoxicating tale about a woman whose cooking seduces an entire city. Eleven luscious recipes complete this unusual novel. We are delighted to request your company at a luncheon with Carol Field on Wednesday, 11 April at Noon. Tickets are $12 and advance reservation is requested.

A Pleasure for Book Groups

For fans of Rebecca Wells and Fannie Flagg comes the paperback publication of Amanda Trigiani’s first novel, Big Stone Gap. Set in rural Virginia, this is the story of Ave Maria Mulligan and her loveable, eccentric family. Big Stone Gap is a gentle, down-home that will appeal to readers and book groups looking for a pleasant break from the tragic intensities of much contemporary fiction.

It is our pleasure to request your company at a reading with Amanda Trigiani on Tuesday, 17 April 2001 at 7:00 PM. As a special treat for this event, we are hosting an informal pie social starting at 6:00 PM. If you’d like to contribute a pie to this lively affair, please give us a call at (925) 837-7337. Reservations for pie social requested.

RAKESTRAW’S READERS RECOMMEND

Mangoes and Quince by Carol Field (Bloomsbury, $24.95). Cookbook writer and food historian turned novelist, San Francisco’s Carol Field gives a first novel that is a feast for the senses. Evocative, sensuous writing conveys not only the passion of love, but also the hunger for it. Charged and lovely writing, some wonderful characters, and more than a few great recipes.

More recommendations will follow later in the month. New titles we are currently reviewing include: Gardens of Kyoto; No Great Mischief, Mary and O’Neil; and Tower.
